Supporting a Love of Reading in Our Community

One of the most meaningful parts of my work in New Orleans has always been the opportunity to give back to the community that gives so much to me. Recently, I had the chance to be part of a moment that perfectly captured why I believe so deeply in supporting local causes — especially those centered around education.
A Special Classroom Donation
I was proud to personally sponsor the donation of 76 copies of Scrim: My Tail, as Told to Margaret Orr to a second grade class at Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary School. The donation was part of a larger effort led by Margaret Orr to place a book into the hands of every public school second grader, ensuring that students have access to stories they can call their own.
Even more special was being able to visit the classroom and join Margaret as she read Scrim to the students. She was joined by illustrator Matt Rinard, who helped bring the story to life by sharing the illustrations with the students. Watching their faces light up was a powerful reminder of how meaningful it is for children to have books they can connect with — and keep. (Read more about my connection to Scrim!)
The Story of Scrim
Scrim: My Tail, as Told to Margaret Orr tells the story of New Orleans’ most famous canine escape artist, who was also named Grand Marshal by the Mystic Krewe of Barkus in 2025. After a dramatic leap from a second-story window in April 2024, the seventeen-pound Westie mix survived hurricanes, a blizzard, and even two gunshot wounds while roaming 57 square miles of the city. His exploits became legendary — snacking on chili dogs, dodging streetcars, crashing Saints tailgates, and even meeting a giraffe at the zoo. After settling into a cozy home, Scrim shared his first-person account of his adventures with beloved storyteller Margaret Orr.
Supporting Local Rescue Groups
All proceeds from the book benefit the nonprofit organization Barkus, which distributes funds to local rescue groups, including Zeus’ Rescues and Michelle Cheramie’s team, helping animals in need across the New Orleans area.
Why Stories Matter
Stories spark curiosity and build confidence. Seeing these students experience the joy of reading together reminded me of just how important access to books is at a young age — and how a donated book can make a lasting difference in a child’s life.
I’m grateful to Margaret Orr for her commitment to literacy and for inviting me to be part of this effort, and to the educators and students at Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary for such a warm welcome.
